SCHALLER, Iowa -- The Schaller Popcorn Days Queen 2007 Queen Lisa Schmidt sported a tiara and gold formal gown, leading the parade through the Sac County community of Schaller - known as "The Popcorn Capital of the World." She and classmates Katie Murra and Chelsie Stephens -- both princesses -- waved and tossed Jolly Time popcorn to hundreds of spectators lining the streets. "I also have to work in the popcorn stand, giving away free popcorn," said Schmidt, a member of the Schaller Shamrocks 4-H Club, a group that uses the popcorn stand as a community service project. "I think we give away $1,000 worth of Jolly Time popcorn throughout Popcorn Days," said Carey Schmidt, who once grew popcorn on the family farm. So did hundreds of other Schaller-area farmers. Consolidated Popcorn, which packaged Jolly Time brands, once employed more than 30 workers at its plant in Schaller. The plant, now named American Popcorn Company, only employs a handful of workers, but still collects corn from farmers and test-pop varieties three times per week, according to Kenny Kroese, a Schaller resident for four decades. Heck, even the town sign notes Schaller's place on the Iowa map with a giant kernel of popcorn. So while the celebration kept hundreds busy with activities like a car show, craft sale, street dance and kids' games, Queen Schmidt knew the real drawing card. "We'll eat a lot of popcorn this weekend," she said. "That's what it's all about." |

| My husband and I were in Schaller Saturday for the Popcorn Festival.
What a wonderful day we had. We are from south of Omaha and
drove to Storm Lake and someone there told about the day. We
had so much fun, the people were so nice and we talked all
day. We then came back into town that evening and played
some bingo and then went to the dance hosted by the Jaycees,
which was a great night!!! We are Jaycees from Nebraska and we put on Louisville Daz every year. I just wanted to say what a great day and evening. Everyone made us feel really welcomed and it was fun! We are already planning on coming back next year in our camper and staying the weekend!! |

area of 3.3 km (1.3 mi), all land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 779 people, 321 households,
and 216 families residing in the city. The population density was
